Almost everyone will encounter a rigid atheist at some point. He or she dismisses everything colored with religious rhetoric and bristles at anything smacking even remotely of the pulpit. Yet, thanks to the internet and evangelization ministries, we can hear the encouraging testimonies of such people who have come to know God. Since I was once one myself, I am particularly interested in their stories. Thankfully, absurd positions are easy to dispel. All one has to do is point to the battery of famed minds who were also believers to debunk it. Although any great mind can be effective, the safest bet is to stick with scientists since atheists universally respect scientific disciplines the same cannot be said for philosophy or literature. Casually observing that nearly all the founding pioneers of modern science were devout individuals is a good tactic. However, pointing solely to historical figures may not be enough. Many of the aforementioned scientists wrote extensively about the interplay between faith and science and responded to skeptics of their time.

As I sat in church looking at my eldest son Charlie standing before the gold altar, clutching a candle at his Holy Communion, I let the priest’s words wash over me. I glanced at my husband Dominic, who was beaming at the priest and Charlie. Could he not see that it was ridiculous? At eight years old, Charlie’s life should be carefree and revolve around sport, sleepovers, friends and fun … not heavyweight pledges about religion.
But I buttoned my lip — it wasn’t the first time Dominic and I had had this debate. The idea that a celibate priest should advise us on marriage seemed laughable.

I am a Catholic who has been brought up in a strict Catholic family. I would consider myself very devout also, due to the fact that I have attended Catholic schools all my life and go to Church every Sunday. Also, I like discussing with him the difference of our beliefs because it has made me more confident about myself and my background.

Answer: I know it is, because I have a hardcore atheist friend who is married to a devout Christian woman. We differ in other ways, too. Women and men are different. Christians and people of other faiths are different. Christians of different denominations are different. Republicans and Democrats are different. Bostonians and San Diegans are different. Mice and men are different. The Salvation of Atheists and Catholic Dogmatic Theology
Atheism is the absence of the belief that deities exist. The English term was used at least as early as the sixteenth century and atheistic ideas and their influence have a longer history. In the East, a contemplative life not centered on the idea of deities began in the sixth century BCE with the rise of Indian religions such as Jainism , Buddhism , and various sects of Hinduism in ancient India , and of Taoism in ancient China.
Within the astika “orthodox” schools of Hindu philosophy , the Samkhya and the early Mimamsa school did not accept a creator deity in their respective systems. The Vedas in the Indian subcontinent admitted only the possibility that deities might exist but went no further.

The relatively charitable and sincere ambience surrounding Mass can be a tonic — even for non-believers. What are we to make of surveys showing that many Christians do not accept basic tenets of the Christian faith? Atheists tend to react to these contradictions with mirth but, as an atheist myself, I wonder whether it would be more fruitful to question underlying assumptions we have about religious practice.
But how many Catholics attending Mass really believe the Vatican has exclusive access to the truth? Growing up as a Catholic in Ireland, one becomes acutely aware that many Christians develop their faith in spite of the Church rather than because of it. That is not authentic faith. One feature of religion which atheists might do better to try to understand is the appeal of ritual. In a fast-changing world, where human values are in flux, religious habits can act as an anchor.
I find belief in God untenable, given the evidence, but I do occasionally go to Mass. Yes, the institution is scurrilous but what unfolds in your average parish church on a Sunday has as much to do with the Roman Curia as an U- 9s football fixture has to do with Fifa. How can Mass appeal to an atheist?

Father Kaplanski: In my opinion, the particular person is the key. If John, a doubting and seeking atheist, loves Rachel, a Catholic, then whatever is important to her is important to him. So a church wedding and a vow made before an altar will have significance for him as well.
Some Christians think all atheists are ridiculous, so they openly mock or belittle My friend, Catholic writer and speaker Jennifer Fulwiler, even recommends using this The Kalam argument dates back to the Middle Ages but has been made.
Criticism of atheism is criticism of the concepts, validity, or impact of atheism , including associated political and social implications. Criticisms include positions based on the history of science , philosophical and logical criticisms, findings in the natural sciences , theistic apologetic arguments, arguments pertaining to ethics and morality , the effects of atheism on the individual, or the assumptions that underpin atheism.
Various contemporary agnostics like Carl Sagan and theists such as Dinesh D’Souza have criticised atheism for being an unscientific position. Analytic philosopher Alvin Plantinga , Professor of Philosophy Emeritus at the University of Notre Dame , argues that a failure of theistic arguments might conceivably be good grounds for agnosticism, but not for atheism; and points to the observation of an apparently ” fine-tuned universe ” as more likely to be explained by theism than atheism.
Oxford Professor of Mathematics John Lennox holds that atheism is an inferior world view to that of theism and attributes to C. Lewis the best formulation of Merton’s thesis that science sits more comfortably with theistic notions on the basis that Men became scientific in Western Europe in the 16th and 17th century “[b]ecause they expected law in nature, and they expected law in nature because they believed in a lawgiver.
American geneticist Francis Collins also cites Lewis as persuasive in convincing him that theism is the more rational world view than atheism. Other criticisms focus on perceived effects on morality and social cohesion. The Enlightenment philosopher Voltaire , a deist , saw godlessness as weakening “the sacred bonds of society”, writing: “If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him”.
The father of classical liberalism , John Locke , believed that the denial of God’s existence would undermine the social order and lead to chaos. Edmund Burke , an 18th-century Irish philosopher and statesman praised by both his conservative and liberal peers for his “comprehensive intellect”, saw religion as the basis of civil society and wrote that “man is by his constitution a religious animal; that atheism is against, not only our reason, but our instincts; and that it cannot prevail long”.
Pope Pius XI wrote that Communist atheism was aimed at “upsetting the social order and at undermining the very foundations of Christian civilization “.
